Fire Safety Compliance & Maintenance in Faringdon

Fire risk assessments, fire alarm servicing, fire door inspections and security maintenance for the businesses, landlords and care providers of Faringdon, Great Coxwell and Littleworth.

Faringdon is the market town of the Western Vale. A historic core of coaching inns and a 17th century market hall sits alongside the industrial estates of Park Road, at the A420 junction, and the Local Plan allocates 950 new homes on four sites around the town.

We travel from Hayes along the M4 and the A420. IDS Global has traded since 2011 and is a member of the IFSM and the FPA.

Businesses and buildings in Faringdon

The Vale of White Horse Local Plan 2031 names Faringdon as the Market Town of the Western Vale, the largest settlement in that sub-area and the main service centre for the rural catchment around it. A Tesco store with a 148 space car park opened on Park Road in November 2013. The Tuesday market runs in the Market Place from 8.30am to 1pm, and the Neighbourhood Plan includes a policy to retain public houses.

Employment land runs along Park Road. The Neighbourhood Plan names the Regal Way area and the Old Sawmills Road and Pioneer Road area as the existing industrial estates. A Marriotts listing for 29 Park Road describes detached steel portal frame units of about 8,939 sq ft in total, with three-phase electrics, roller shutter doors and a first-floor office suite. Faringdon Community College on Fernham Road teaches 1,382 pupils aged 11 to 18, and Coxwell Hall and Mews Nursing Home on the same road is registered for nursing and dementia care.

Fire Risk Assessments in Faringdon

The Neighbourhood Plan describes a historic core of coaching inns and older streets around the Market Place. Buildings like these often combine a bar or shop at street level, rooms above and an altered escape route. The council also hires out the Old Town Hall, the Corn Exchange and the Pump House Jubilee Room for events.

We assess the whole building, including upper floors, rear escape and any hired-out hall, and rank what needs to change first.

Fire Alarm Servicing in Faringdon

A unit on Park Road may put a roller shutter workshop and a first-floor office on one alarm system.

We test detectors, call points and sounders on a rota, check the panel and standby batteries and record every visit in the log book. The FPA reported that from 10 October 2024 Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service stopped attending most automatic alarms unless a fire is confirmed, which makes a well-kept system and a clear 999 procedure more important.

Conservation areas, the Old Town Hall and Great Coxwell Barn

The Vale lists Faringdon among its designated conservation areas without a formal appraisal, and lists Littleworth in the same group. The Old Town Hall is, in the town council's words, a late 17th century building raised on classical stone pillars in the Market Place, built by public subscription after the Civil War and one of only two surviving town halls of that period in the Vale. Wikipedia records it as Grade II* listed.

Great Coxwell, about two kilometres south-west of the town, has an appraisal and management plan adopted by the Vale in September 2022. It dates the Great Barn by tree rings to about 1292, calls it one of the largest and best-preserved in England, and lists it at Grade I and as a scheduled monument. The National Trust received the Radnor estate, including the barn, in 1956. Several village cottages are or were thatched.

New homes, Park Road and Wicklesham

The Local Plan 2031, adopted in December 2016, allocates 350 homes south of Park Road, 200 south-west of Faringdon, 200 east of Coxwell Road in Great Coxwell parish and 200 south of Faringdon. It safeguards the Park Road Industrial Estate and the 4&20 site beside the A420 for employment.

The Neighbourhood Plan, part of the development plan since 24 November 2016, records outline permission in September 2015 for 2,817 square metres of retail on part of the 4&20 site, described as providing about 120 jobs. It also safeguards Wicklesham Quarry for industrial and storage use once restoration ends, and the examiner noted the quarry's SSSI status. The plan supports limited expansion at Wicklesham Farm, which contains a Grade II listed barn and granary.

Faringdon fire station and alarm attendance

Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service's Faringdon station is on Station Road and is an on-call station. In December 2024 Oxfordshire County Council announced a £700,000 redevelopment, to start in January 2025 and take about four months.

The FPA reported that from 10 October 2024 the service stopped attending automatic alarms unless the building is high risk, a fire is confirmed or there are signs of fire. High risk includes care homes, hospitals and buildings with sleeping accommodation, so a nursing home still has crews called. Any premises outside those categories should plan on crews attending only when a fire is confirmed or signs of fire are reported.

Recorded crime in and around Faringdon

Police.uk places Faringdon in Thames Valley Police's Faringdon neighbourhood, a wider area than the town itself. We counted street-level records for August 2025 to July 2026 that fall inside its boundary and within one mile of the town's central coordinates. Police.uk anonymises locations, so the figures are approximate.

That circle holds about 659 records: 265 violence and sexual offences, 97 shoplifting, 91 anti-social behaviour, 49 public order, 46 other theft, 40 criminal damage and arson, 17 burglary and 11 vehicle crime. Of about 93 burglaries in the whole neighbourhood, roughly 76 fall outside the circle.

Frequently asked questions

Will the fire service attend an automatic alarm at our Park Road unit?

Not by default. The FPA reported that Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service attends an automatic alarm only when the premises is high risk, a fire is confirmed or there are signs of fire. The high risk list it describes names care homes, hospitals, sleeping accommodation, vulnerable people and critical community assets. Agree who checks the panel, who dials 999 and who holds the keys, and consider alarm monitoring.

We run a care home near Faringdon. Will crews still respond to our alarm?

The FPA reported that care homes and hospitals, and buildings with sleeping accommodation, count as high risk under the service's policy from 10 October 2024. That means crews are still sent to an alarm in such a building. Regular servicing limits false activations that disturb residents and staff.

Can you service alarms and cameras in a listed building in the Market Place?

Yes. The Old Town Hall is a Grade II* listed building, and the Vale treats Faringdon as a conservation area. We survey first, favour compact equipment, and suggest you check with the Vale before anything is fixed to a listed frontage.

Is crime higher in Faringdon town or in the villages around it?

Police.uk data for August 2025 to July 2026 shows about 97 of the neighbourhood's 119 shoplifting records within a mile of the town centre, while about 76 of its 93 burglary records lie outside that circle. Figures are approximate, so use them to decide where cameras and intruder alarms need servicing first.
