Fire Safety Awareness: A Close Call at Our Office Residency, Hayes

  • 19 August 2024

At IDS Global UK, fire safety is our top priority, and last week, our commitment to it was tested during a real-life fire incident at Our Office Residency in Hayes, where we are headquartered. A small but alarming fire broke out when a power bank overheated. The power bank was charging both from a wall socket and simultaneously powering a phone, which caused the device to overheat and ignite. Fortunately, the fire was detected early by the fire alarm system, installed by IDS Global UK, and swiftly extinguished with fire extinguishers—also supplied and installed by us.

This incident demonstrates the importance of being vigilant about fire hazards, even with everyday devices like power banks, and the need for well-maintained fire safety systems. The fire safety measures in place at Our Office Residency, all installed according to British Standard BS 5839, played a crucial role in preventing what could have been a much more serious event. We've shared visuals of the damage on our Instagram page to help raise awareness and encourage proactive fire safety measures.

Fire Safety Tips and Critical Facts

This incident serves as a valuable reminder of the risks of fire and the need to be well-prepared. Below are some key fire safety tips and facts to help you safeguard your home or workplace:

  • Power banks and other electronic devices can pose fire risks if plugged in and unattended. When charging multiple devices simultaneously, they can easily overheat. Always avoid leaving these devices charging overnight or when you're not present.
  • Electric scooters and e-bikes, while increasingly popular, can also become fire hazards due to battery overheating. Ensure they are charged in well-ventilated spaces and never left charging unattended.
  • Properly functioning fire alarms and smoke detectors are lifesavers. The BS 5839 Part 1 standard offers critical guidance for fire detection systems. Ensuring your alarms meet these regulations is essential. Without a working fire alarm, a fire could spread unnoticed, leaving little time to escape.
  • Fire spreads quickly, and smoke can be lethal. In less than two minutes, a fire can become life-threatening. Without an early warning system like a smoke detector, occupants may not have time to escape the building safely.

The Dangers of Unattended Charging

One of the most important lessons from the incident at Our Office Residency is the danger of leaving electronic devices, such as power banks, electric scooters, and e-bikes, charging unattended. The risk of overheating is significantly higher when devices are left plugged in for extended periods or when multiple devices are using the same power source. It's essential to be mindful of this, as such oversights can quickly escalate into dangerous situations.

The Importance of Early Fire Detection Systems

Without the proper fire detection systems in place, such incidents can easily spiral out of control. Fires that break out when buildings are unoccupied or during the night, when people are asleep, pose a heightened risk to both life and property. Many fire-related fatalities occur because there are no working alarms to alert people to danger in time. Compliance with BS 5839 and regular maintenance checks are key to ensuring that fire alarms remain operational.

Similarly, the BS 5306 standard for fire extinguishing equipment ensures that fire extinguishers are correctly installed, regularly inspected, and ready for use in emergencies. Had these systems not been present at Our Office Residency, the outcome could have been far worse.
