Fire Safety & Security Services in Abingdon

Fire risk assessments, fire alarm installation, CCTV and access control for landlords, care providers, retailers and laboratory occupiers in Abingdon, Drayton and Radley.

Abingdon-on-Thames had 37,931 residents at the 2021 Census. The Vale of White Horse Local Plan names it the district's Market Town and the largest settlement in its part of the Vale, with a Grade I listed County Hall on the Market Place and science and business parks around its edges.

We reach Abingdon from our Hayes head office on the M4 to junction 13, then the A34, which bypasses the town, and the A415 or A4183 into it. IDS Global has traded since 2011 and is a member of the IFSM and the FPA.

Businesses and buildings in Abingdon

The Local Plan 2031, adopted in December 2016, describes a town centre of national retailers and small independent traders. It calls the Abbey Shopping Centre and the Charter area a key part of the centre, holding shops and community services along with flats and offices, and supports their enhancement under Core Policy 10. The plan safeguards eight strategic employment sites in the town: Ashville Trading Estate, Abingdon Business Park, Nuffield Way, Drayton Road Industrial Estate, Fitzharris Trading Estate, Abingdon Science Park, Radley Road Industrial Estate and Barton Mill in Audlett Drive.

Abingdon Science Park lies less than a mile from the centre. Its Science Quadrant is a cluster of self-contained two-storey lab-enabled offices of roughly 1,000 to 2,500 sq ft. Nearby Culham Campus has more than 3,000 people working on fusion research and over 45 commercial organisations, but the Local Plan places Culham in South Oxfordshire. Dalton Barracks, an Army base west of the town, is allocated for 1,200 homes. Abingdon Court Care Home on Marcham Road is registered for nursing, personal and dementia care, and Abingdon School and Radley College both take boarders.

Fire Risk Assessments in Abingdon

A town centre building often does several jobs at once. The Local Plan describes the Abbey Shopping Centre and the Charter area as shops and community services with flats and offices, so one block can have a shopfront, a residential stair and a service yard, each under a different occupier. County Hall was built between 1678 and 1683 as Berkshire's county hall and is now a museum, and the Abbey Buildings are hired out for weddings, concerts and festivals.

We assess the building as it is used today and give you a ranked action plan.

Fire Alarm Installation in Abingdon

The fire service treats buildings that house vulnerable people or provide sleeping accommodation as high risk. That description fits a care home such as Abingdon Court, which is registered for dementia care, and a boarding school such as Radley College.

We design and install BS 5839 systems for care homes, boarding houses and mixed-use blocks. For laboratory and office buildings on the Science Park we zone panels by tenancy, so staff can tell which unit is in alarm before they call 999.

CCTV Installation in Abingdon

Police.uk data for August 2025 to July 2026 records about 155 shoplifting offences, 52 vehicle crimes and 50 bicycle thefts inside the Abingdon Town neighbourhood boundary. The wider Abingdon Outer neighbourhood recorded about 106 burglaries in the same period, more than double the town's 50.

We install CCTV for shops, yards, cycle stores and car parks, with cameras on entrances, tills and boundaries and recording that staff can export for the police.

Access Control by IDS Global

Access Control in Abingdon

Where several companies share a park such as Abingdon Business Park, or a cluster of lab-enabled units like the Science Quadrant, each tenant needs its own rules. Visitors, contractors and delivery drivers should not walk into laboratory or stock areas.

We fit card, fob and keypad access control on office doors, goods entrances and yard gates, so a manager can cancel a credential without changing a lock.

Abingdon's conservation areas and Grade I buildings

Abingdon has three conservation areas: Town Centre, designated in December 1968, Albert Park in February 1975 and Northcourt in February 1978, amended in 2008. Only Northcourt has an adopted appraisal, and the council says conservation areas all benefit from the same level of protection.

The Abbey Buildings, a Grade I listed scheduled monument with 13th to 15th century monastic origins, house the Unicorn Theatre and a hire venue. County Hall was designed by Christopher Kempster, is Grade I listed and held assize courts until 1867. Check with the Vale council before fixing a sounder, camera or cable run to a listed or conservation area building.

Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service and alarm calls in Abingdon

Abingdon fire station is on Ock Street, OX14 5DH, and is day crewed with on-call cover. The Fire Protection Association reported in July 2024 that from 10 October 2024 the county's fire and rescue service would attend automatic alarms only at high-risk buildings or where a fire is confirmed or there are signs of fire. It defines high risk as buildings housing vulnerable people, providing sleeping accommodation or serving as a critical community asset.

The Association says about 99% of the automatic alarms the service attends are false, linked to poor maintenance, staff not trained to investigate and outdated fire risk assessments.

Recorded crime in the two Abingdon neighbourhoods

We counted police.uk street-level crimes inside each Thames Valley Police neighbourhood boundary for August 2025 to July 2026, the latest twelve months published. Police.uk anonymises locations, so the figures are approximate.

Abingdon Town recorded about 2,290 crimes, including 155 shoplifting, 52 vehicle crimes, 50 burglaries and 50 bicycle thefts. Abingdon Outer recorded about 1,480, including 106 burglaries, 71 vehicle crimes and 56 shoplifting.

HMO licensing in the Vale of White Horse

The Vale of White Horse council licenses shared homes under the mandatory scheme: a licence is needed where five or more people live in the property, and in September 2026 the council's page said it did not operate additional or selective HMO licensing. A licence lasts five years, and the listed fee is £1,034 for up to five bedrooms. An HMO occupied by more than six people also needs planning permission.

Frequently asked questions

Will the fire service turn out if the alarm sounds at my Abingdon premises?

Not automatically. From 10 October 2024 Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service stopped attending automatic alarms unless the building is high risk, a fire is confirmed or there are signs of fire. Your fire risk assessment should name who investigates an alarm, who calls 999 and how false alarms are logged and reduced.

Does a shared house in Abingdon need an HMO licence?

A licence is required when five or more people live in the property, and the Vale council lists a fee of £1,034 for up to five bedrooms. We can assess fire doors and alarms in a shared house before you apply.

Can alarms or cameras be fitted to a listed building in Abingdon town centre?

Often, with care. Abingdon has three conservation areas, and County Hall and the Abbey Buildings are Grade I listed. We survey first, favour compact equipment and discreet cable routes, and suggest you check with the Vale council before anything is fixed to a listed or protected frontage.

Is Culham Campus covered by the Vale of White Horse council?

No. The Vale of White Horse Local Plan places Culham within South Oxfordshire, so planning questions there go to that council. The Vale council covers Abingdon itself, Drayton and Radley.

How can a laboratory unit on Abingdon Science Park cut false alarms?

Start with the causes the Fire Protection Association names: poor maintenance, staff not trained to investigate, and outdated risk assessments. Log every activation, have an engineer review detector types and positions, and service the system to BS 5839.
