Businesses and buildings in Battersea

Wandsworth's Local Plan names Clapham Junction as one of the borough's five town centres, alongside Wandsworth, Putney, Tooting and Balham. Its station recorded, in 2024 to 2025, 24.448 million entries and exits, of which 20.404 million were interchanges. The Arding & Hobbs store on Lavender Hill was completed in 1910, after the original building burned down on 20 December 1909.

Nearer the river, New Covent Garden Market opened at Nine Elms on 11 November 1974, covers 57 acres and is home to about 200 fruit, vegetable and flower companies, with produce trading from around midnight. Battersea Power Station combines homes, offices, shops and a food hall, and Embassy Gardens was approved for up to 1,982 homes and a 100 bed hotel.

Fire Risk Assessments by IDS Global

Fire Risk Assessments in Battersea

On 15 February 2026 fire damaged two second-floor flats and part of the roof of a three-storey building on Battersea Park Road, with shops on the ground floor and homes above. The cause was a faulty USB charging plug, and a working smoke alarm let the occupants leave unharmed. A parade like this needs an assessment that treats shop, stair and flats as one building.

Taller blocks carry further duties: a residential building of at least 7 floors or 18 metres with two or more homes must be registered with the Building Safety Regulator. On 11 May 2026 a seventh-floor flat in a ten-storey block on Charlotte Despard Avenue was destroyed without the fire spreading, and about 50 residents left before crews arrived. We rank the actions for blocks of every height by risk.

Fire Doors by IDS Global

Fire Door Installation in Battersea

The Shaftesbury Park Estate has about 1,200 two-storey houses built between 1873 and 1877, and since July 2025 Wandsworth's additional licensing has covered smaller shared houses and shared flats in purpose built blocks of three or more flats. In shared and converted buildings, the door to each letting and the door onto the stair hold a fire back while people leave.

On 24 March 2026 hot works on the roof of a two-storey block on Gwynne Road started a fire that left two flats water damaged. We supply and fit fire doors with frames, seals and closers, matched to the age and layout of each building.

Fire Alarm Installation in Battersea

Battersea Arts Centre, the Grade II* former Town Hall of 1893, lost its Grand Hall and Lower Hall to a roof fire on 13 March 2015 during renovation work, with no injuries. An old building with a roof void and a public audience needs detection that covers hidden spaces.

The Power Station has 254 apartments inside a Grade II* listed structure, beside offices and shops. We design BS 5839 systems for mixed occupancy, with zoning that lets a duty manager tell a shop unit from a residential landing, and cable routes agreed in advance for listed fabric.

CCTV Installation in Battersea

Police.uk records for August 2025 to July 2026 show about 329 shoplifting offences inside the Lavender neighbourhood boundary and about 169 in Nine Elms, which also logged about 127 thefts from the person. Produce trading at New Covent Garden starts around midnight, so cameras there must cope with low light.

We cover entrances, tills, loading points and car parks, with recording a manager can export for the police.

Nine Elms, the Power Station and the Opportunity Area

Wandsworth's Local Plan, adopted on 19 July 2023, treats Nine Elms as an Opportunity Area within a borough target of at least 20,311 homes from 2023 to 2038. Battersea Power Station was listed Grade II in 1980 and upgraded to Grade II* in 2007. The Northern Line extension opened in 2021, and the building and Electric Boulevard opened to the public on 14 October 2022.

The United States Embassy moved from Grosvenor Square to Nine Elms and became operational in January 2018.

Conservation areas and listed buildings

Wandsworth's conservation area list runs to 43 areas, and six of them are in Battersea: Battersea Park, Battersea Square, Clapham Junction, Park Town, Shaftesbury Park Estate and Latchmere. The Shaftesbury Park Estate is under an Article 4 Direction, which means planning permission is needed for external alterations visible from the street, and for walls, fences and gates facing a road. Cameras, bell boxes and gates on those streets should be agreed with the council first.

Listed buildings include Arding & Hobbs (Grade II, 30 November 2001), Battersea Arts Centre (Grade II*), Queenstown Road station (Grade II) and Battersea Park station (Grade II since 7 April 1983).

HMO and property licensing in Wandsworth

Wandsworth requires a mandatory licence for larger HMOs, which the council describes as five or more occupiers from two or more households. Since 1 July 2025 additional licensing has covered HMOs with up to four people sharing a bathroom or kitchen, and flats in multiple occupation within purpose built blocks of three or more flats.

Selective licensing reaches Northcote ward from April 2026. Published fees include £1,507 for an additional HMO licence and £885 for a selective licence, with mandatory HMO fees running from £1,711 for three bedrooms to £2,117 for ten or more.

Recorded crime in five Battersea neighbourhoods

We counted police.uk street-level crimes inside Metropolitan Police neighbourhood boundaries for August 2025 to July 2026, using simplified outlines, so figures are approximate. Shaftesbury and Queenstown recorded about 2,114 crimes, including 137 burglaries and 137 thefts from the person. Lavender recorded about 1,993, including 329 shoplifting offences and 102 burglaries. Battersea Park logged about 189 vehicle crimes and 111 burglaries, and St Mary's about 157 vehicle crimes and 101 burglaries.

Frequently asked questions

Does a shared house in Battersea need an HMO licence?

Very likely. Wandsworth runs additional licensing borough wide from 1 July 2025 for HMOs with up to four people sharing amenities, alongside mandatory licensing for larger ones. The council lists a fee of £1,507 for an additional licence. We can assess the house and upgrade alarms or fire doors before an inspection.

Does our Nine Elms block have to be registered with the Building Safety Regulator?

GOV.UK says a building with at least 7 floors or at least 18 metres in height and two or more residential units must be registered, and allowing residents to occupy an unregistered one is an offence. The principal accountable person handles this. A current fire risk assessment supports the safety case report.

Which part of Battersea has the most shoplifting?

Police.uk data for August 2025 to July 2026 puts the Lavender neighbourhood highest, at about 329 offences inside its boundary. Nine Elms recorded about 169, St Mary's 128 and Shaftesbury and Queenstown 126. Battersea Park recorded about 74. Counts are approximate.

Can you fit CCTV to a house in the Shaftesbury Park Estate?

Possibly, with planning care. The estate is a conservation area under an Article 4 Direction, so external alterations visible from the street, and walls, fences and gates facing a road, need planning permission. We survey first, favour discreet positions, and advise you to check with Wandsworth Council before anything is fixed to the front of a property.

Which fire station covers Battersea?

London Fire Brigade lists Battersea Fire Station at 11 Este Road, SW11 2TL, one of three in Wandsworth. Crews from Battersea attended both the March 2026 Gwynne Road roof fire and the February 2026 Battersea Park Road fire.
