Fire Safety Compliance & Maintenance in Cirencester

Fire alarm servicing, alarm monitoring, fire risk assessments and fire extinguisher servicing for businesses in Cirencester, from the Cotswold stone streets around the Market Place to Love Lane Industrial Estate and the Cotswold Business Park at Kemble.

Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service applies an automatic fire alarm policy to commercial premises and says it will consider suspending attendance where false alarms are frequent, so the reliability of an existing alarm has direct consequences.

We reach Cirencester from our head office in Hayes by the M4 to junction 15 and then the A419. IDS Global was established in 2011 and holds IFSM and FPA membership.

Businesses and buildings in Cirencester

Cotswold District Council's character appraisal for the Town Centre Conservation Area describes two distinct halves inside the ring road. North of Lewis Lane and Querns Lane is a curvilinear medieval street pattern of dense two and three storey buildings built up to the back of the pavement, holding most of the town's listed buildings and a retail core of mainly small independent shops with some national chains. The appraisal also highlights the "places", courtyard mews off the main streets, with Black Jack Street having many commercial examples.

Love Lane Industrial Estate, about a mile south of the centre, is described by its letting agents as Cirencester's primary industrial location, with trade counter occupiers including Wickes, Travis Perkins, City Plumbing and Tool Station. Near Kemble, the Cotswold Business Park and Airport offers open storage plots of 0.5 to 50 acres. The Royal Agricultural University, described by the university as the first agricultural college in the English speaking world, received its Royal Charter in 1845.

Fire Alarm Servicing in Cirencester

GFRS lists causes of unwanted fire signals including dust on detectors, steam, cooking fumes, a change in how a room is used, and systems tested without telling the monitoring centre. Several can be picked up during a planned service visit.

We test detectors, call points and sounders and check that detector types still suit each room. Where an office above a Market Place shop has become a kitchen or store, that check can remove a cause of repeat activations. At Love Lane units with first floor offices over a warehouse floor, we confirm that alarm zones still reflect the current layout.

Alarm Monitoring in Cirencester

GFRS advises owners of unoccupied premises to keep keyholder and on-site security details accurate and to consider linking the alarm system to CCTV.

We connect existing fire and intruder alarms to monitoring, keep keyholder lists up to date and test the signal path to the receiving centre. For large open storage sites, such as those offered at the Cotswold Business Park, monitored intruder alarms add a response route outside working hours.

Fire Risk Assessments by IDS Global

Fire Risk Assessments in Cirencester

Where a shop or office sits within a listed building or behind a courtyard entrance, escape routes can be narrow, shared or indirect. Our assessments record each route, identify who controls shared parts, and give a prioritised action plan.

Cotswold District Council's HMO guidance states that the responsible person must carry out a fire risk assessment. On industrial units, the focus shifts to storage, yard use and how the alarm is raised across mixed office and warehouse space.

Fire Extinguisher Servicing in Cirencester

Trade counters, workshops, cafés above shops and university buildings each need a different mix of extinguishers. We carry out the annual service, record each unit, and check that types and positions still match each area's current use, flagging any that obstruct an exit.

GFRS automatic fire alarm policy

GFRS's fire alarm FAQ states that last year (the year is not given) it attended more than 1,700 calls from automatic fire alarm systems, and 98% were false alarms. Its policy applies to premises covered by the Fire Safety Order. An emergency response is still sent to premises including HMOs, care homes, hospitals, hotels and B&Bs between 20:00 and 08:00, and recognised heritage buildings with GFRS's prior agreement. GFRS responds immediately to a coincidence alarm, where more than one detector or call point activates, and will consider suspending attendance at premises with a high incidence of false alarms. Cirencester Community Fire and Rescue Station, on School Lane, is crewed on call.

HMO licensing under Cotswold District Council

Cotswold District Council requires a mandatory licence for an HMO occupied by five or more people forming two or more households who share a kitchen or bathroom. Its HMO page does not describe an additional or selective scheme. A cabinet report for 10 July 2025 recommended extending the licence period from three to five years, with new fees from 1 September 2025, and noted 42 licensed HMOs across the district; the council's HMO page now gives a five year licence period. The council's expected precautions include heat detectors and fire blankets in kitchens, interlinked smoke detection in halls, stairs and landings, and fire doors to kitchens, possibly to all doors in larger HMOs of three or more storeys.

Cotswold stone, Corinium and the town centre conservation area

The council's appraisal identifies Cotswold stone, for buildings, walls and stone slate roofs, as one of the town centre's most memorable features. The medieval Market Place is dominated by the parish church, the largest in Gloucestershire. Roman Corinium Dobunnorum was second only to London in size and status. The Corinium Museum reports over 90 mosaics known from the town and surrounding area.

Recorded crime in Cirencester Urban

police.uk street-level data for the Gloucestershire Constabulary Cirencester Urban neighbourhood records around 1,961 crimes from February 2025 to January 2026, the latest twelve months published. These include 266 shoplifting offences, 95 of criminal damage and arson, 52 burglaries and 41 vehicle crimes. Shoplifting was highest in November 2025 (59) and December 2025 (58). The neighbourhood boundary was simplified for the query, so figures are approximate.

Frequently asked questions

Will a fire engine attend when the fire alarm activates at my Cirencester shop or office?

Not necessarily. GFRS applies its automatic fire alarm policy to premises covered by the Fire Safety Order, while sleeping risk premises, HMOs, hospitals, and hotels overnight still receive an emergency response. If there is doubt about the premises type, a fire engine is sent as a precaution. A coincidence alarm, with more than one detector or call point activating, gets an immediate response.

Can our listed building in Cirencester get an emergency response to its fire alarm?

GFRS lists recognised heritage buildings among the premises that still receive an emergency response, but only with its prior agreement. Owners of listed town centre premises can raise this with the GFRS Fire Safety Enforcement and Risk Team. GFRS also says it will consider suspending attendance where false alarms are frequent, so servicing records matter.

Do I need an HMO licence for a shared house in Cirencester?

Cotswold District Council requires a licence where five or more people forming two or more households share a kitchen or bathroom. Licences run for five years unless the council sets a shorter period, and renewals must be submitted at least 28 days before expiry. Operating an unlicensed HMO can lead to an unlimited fine or a civil penalty of up to £30,000.

What causes false fire alarms in older Cirencester buildings?

GFRS lists dust on detectors, steam, aerosols, humidity and temperature changes, cooking fumes, candles and incense, and contractors working near detectors. It also names changes in how a room is used, relevant where upper floors are reorganised. Checking detector types against each room's current use and reviewing past activations helps reduce repeat calls.

How is an unoccupied unit at Love Lane or Kemble best protected out of hours?

GFRS advises owners of unoccupied premises to keep keyholder and on-site security contact details accurate and to consider linking the fire alarm to CCTV. Monitoring existing alarms with tested signal paths and current keyholder lists means an activation reaches someone who can check the site.
