From 1 April 2024, Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service stopped sending crews to automatic fire alarms at low-risk commercial premises unless a 999 call or other information confirms a fire. It continues to attend homes, residential buildings, anywhere people sleep or receive care, and identified higher-risk premises. The service says investigating an alarm is the responsibility of the premises, and expects businesses to have daytime and out-of-hours procedures. Swindon is covered by stations at Swindon, Stratton and Westlea.

HMO licensing in Swindon Borough

Swindon Borough Council requires a mandatory licence for HMOs occupied by five or more people from more than one household, usually granted for five years. From 1 April 2026 the online fee is £1,474.11 for up to 10 occupants and £1,684.70 above that. Applications must include a gas safety certificate, a valid annual fire detection service or commissioning certificate, an electrical condition report with no C1 or C2 observations and, where available, a fire risk assessment. The council inspects HMOs during the licence, and penalties include civil penalties of up to £30,000 per offence and rent repayment orders.
