Fire Safety Compliance & Maintenance in Royal Wootton Bassett

Fire risk assessments, fire door inspections, fire alarm servicing and upkeep of existing security systems for Royal Wootton Bassett's historic High Street and the business parks on the town's southern edge.

The town pairs Georgian buildings in a conservation area with data centre and office premises near the M4, and each needs a different approach.

We cover the town from our head office in Hayes, travelling west on the M4 to junction 16, about two miles from the town. IDS Global was established in 2011 and holds IFSM and FPA membership.

Businesses and buildings in Royal Wootton Bassett

Royal Wootton Bassett is a market town six miles west of Swindon, with 13,600 residents at the 2021 census. Along the High Street the neighbourhood plan records Georgian buildings reused as shops, the Waggon and Horses claiming a date of 1612 and the Cross Keys Inn dating from 1742. Between 2007 and 18 August 2011 the town marked 167 repatriation ceremonies for service personnel brought home through RAF Lyneham, and it received its Royal title on 16 October 2011 in recognition.

Interface Business Park, on the southern edge of the town, has office occupiers including Dolby Laboratories and Swindon Silicon Systems, while Maybrook Properties holds 120,000 sq ft of industrial and data centre space there let to Swiss Post and Virgin Media. Templars Way Industrial Estate on Marlborough Road, about half a mile south of the High Street, is described by agents as one of the town's principal employment areas. Unit 4 there, for example, is a detached warehouse of 9,312 sq ft combining workshop space, two floors of offices and mezzanine storage.

Fire Risk Assessments by IDS Global

Fire Risk Assessments in Royal Wootton Bassett

A Georgian shop on the High Street and a warehouse unit at Templars Way raise different questions. In the older buildings, an assessment looks at protected escape routes through altered historic layouts and at any residential use above the shop. In a warehouse unit with first floor offices and mezzanine storage, it looks at travel distances, storage heights and how an alarm is heard across the workshop floor.

Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service guidance notes that, under section 156 of the Building Safety Act, the responsible person for non-domestic premises must record the assessment in full, with its findings, the fire safety arrangements and the assessor's name and contact details. Our written reports meet that standard and give a prioritised action plan.

Fire Doors by IDS Global

Fire Door Inspections in Royal Wootton Bassett

Fire doors protect stairs and escape routes in High Street premises, office buildings at Interface Business Park and the office sections of industrial units. DWFRS sets out five checks: a certification label or plug on the door, gaps at the top and sides consistently under 4mm, intact intumescent seals, three or more firmly fixed hinges, and a door that closes onto its latch without sticking.

We carry out those checks and more, then issue a photographic report with a remedial schedule. In the conservation area, the report separates historic doors from later replacements.

Fire Alarm Servicing in Royal Wootton Bassett

Data centre, distribution and office premises at Interface Business Park depend on detection that stays reliable. We service and test existing fire alarm systems: device and sounder checks, fault finding, battery tests and log book entries. Where an alarm serves more than one occupier, we confirm which responsible person holds the service records.

CCTV and Intruder Alarm Maintenance in Royal Wootton Bassett

Criminal damage and arson outnumber shoplifting several times over in local police.uk figures. We maintain existing CCTV, intruder alarms, access control and gates: cleaning and re-aiming cameras so shopfronts and yards stay in view, checking that recorders retain usable footage, and testing detectors and batteries. Existing systems can also be connected to alarm monitoring.

The Town Hall and the Wootton Bassett Conservation Area

The Town Hall is a Grade II listed building, first listed on 17 January 1955. The list entry dates it to about 1700 and describes a timber-framed upper storey raised on 15 tapered stone columns, much restored in 1889. The Town Council describes the upper floor as a former council chamber above a market storeroom and lock-up; the building now contains a museum. The town centre is partly covered by the Wootton Bassett Conservation Area, which the draft neighbourhood plan records as extended in 1989. That draft also names local heritage assets such as the National School on Station Road and The Maltings.

The neighbourhood plan for 2026 to 2038

Royal Wootton Bassett's first neighbourhood plan was made in April 2018 to cover 2017 to 2026. The Town Council ran a Regulation 14 consultation on its replacement from 29 September to 23 November 2025 and reported in February 2026 that the plan had been submitted to Wiltshire Council. An independent examiner has since been appointed, and a two-week consultation on an addendum to the plan's basic conditions statement closed on 2 September 2026. The Town Council has not published a referendum date. The submission plan includes a site allocation at Land at Templars Way, which the consultation draft proposed for up to 95 homes.

Royal Wootton Bassett fire station

The town is served by an on-call station on Station Road, whose firefighters have other jobs and respond by pager. It is also a co-responder station, attending medical emergencies ahead of an ambulance. A DWFRS station information sheet published in 2019 recorded an average of about four calls a week: two in the daytime, one in the evening and one at night. The service lists Chippenham, Corsham, Cricklade and Malmesbury as the nearest other stations.

Recorded crime in Wootton Bassett Town

police.uk street-level data for the Wiltshire Police Wootton Bassett Town neighbourhood, using its published boundary, records 714 crimes from August 2025 to July 2026. That includes 336 violent crimes, 123 anti-social behaviour incidents, 94 offences of criminal damage and arson, 16 burglaries, 13 shoplifting offences and 6 vehicle crimes. The boundary was simplified for the query, so figures are approximate.

Frequently asked questions

Do fire safety works in a High Street building need heritage consent?

It depends on the building. The Town Hall is Grade II listed, and the town centre is partly within the Wootton Bassett Conservation Area, where the neighbourhood plan sets design criteria for new development. Wiltshire Council is the planning authority to consult. Our fire door and fire risk assessment reports note which features appear historic, so you can take advice before remedial work is specified.

What must a fire risk assessment for a Templars Way unit record?

DWFRS guidance states that, under section 156 of the Building Safety Act, the responsible person for any non-domestic premises must record the fire risk assessment in full, including all findings and the fire safety arrangements. It must also give the name and contact details of the person who carried it out. For a unit with offices and mezzanine storage, the assessment should cover each level and the route out from it.

Is the local fire station crewed around the clock?

Royal Wootton Bassett fire station on Station Road is an on-call station. Its firefighters have other jobs and respond by pager, travelling to the station before attending. DWFRS lists Chippenham, Corsham, Cricklade and Malmesbury as the nearest other stations. Whatever the crewing, businesses remain responsible for fire safety in their own premises under the Fire Safety Order.

Can IDS Global inspect fire doors in shared offices at Interface Business Park?

Yes. DWFRS guidance names landlords and managing agents as responsible persons in multi-occupied buildings, alongside employers who control their own space, so responsibility for a door depends on who controls that part of the building. We inspect against the DWFRS checks for gaps, seals, hinges and closers and the wider standard, then report by door so each responsible person can see their own actions.
