Fire Safety Compliance & Maintenance in Devizes

Fire risk assessments, fire alarm servicing, fire door inspections and security system maintenance for Devizes town centre, its care homes and the Hopton industrial units, and for premises at Roundway and Rowde.

Historic England data lists 295 listed buildings inside the Devizes conservation area, and the Market Place is anchored by a Grade II Corn Exchange. Wadworth moved its brewing to a new site on Folly Road in 2023, and in March 2025 councillors approved homes on the old Northgate brewery site.

We reach Devizes from our Hayes head office by the M4 and the A361. IDS Global was established in 2011 and is a member of the IFSM and the FPA.

Businesses and buildings in Devizes

The 2021 Census counted 16,834 people in Devizes. The Market Place holds the Market Cross and the Estcourt Fountain of 1879, and three former coaching inns, the Bear Hotel, the Pelican Inn and the Black Swan Hotel, still trade around it. The Corn Exchange opened in 1857 and reopened in 1995 after refurbishment. It is now an events venue: its Ceres Hall is listed at up to 200 people for a banquet and up to 500 for a conference, concert or show, with two rooms on an upper floor and a nightclub in the basement.

Hopton Industrial Estate is described in an agent's listing as the town's primary employment area. One unit there is a detached clear-span portal frame building of 10,587 sq ft, with a 7,233 sq ft warehouse and two-storey offices of 3,354 sq ft. The Care Quality Commission lists dementia care at Briggs Lodge on London Road, Avebury House on Canal Way and Hayward Care Centre on Corn Croft Lane. Rowde lies about 1.7 miles north-west of the centre on the A342.

Fire Risk Assessments in Devizes

A venue like the Corn Exchange shows why one assessment rarely fits a whole building. A hall with a stated capacity of 500, upper rooms and a basement bar each have different occupants, exits and risks, and the assessment has to follow the event layout actually in use.

Change of use is the other local theme. At Wadworth's former Northgate brewery, councillors approved 102 homes, shops and open space in March 2025. When a building takes on new uses, we reassess it and name who is responsible for the shared parts.

Fire Alarm Servicing in Devizes

On 4 June 2026 alarms sounded at Hopton Industrial Estate and smoke was seen inside a building. Crews from Devizes, Chippenham and Trowbridge found a small fire in the main electrical distribution unit, isolated the electrics and made the building safe.

Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service's guidance sets a six-monthly inspection by a competent person. Our visits test detectors and sounders zone by zone and record faults, so the responsible person holds a dated log of every activation.

Fire Door Inspections in Devizes

Care homes such as Avebury House and Hayward Care Centre rely on doors to hold a fire in one compartment while residents are helped to move. The service's guidance lists a monthly check of closers and hardware and a six-monthly look at leaves and frames for damage or bowing.

We inspect door by door, photograph each defect and issue a numbered repair schedule.

CCTV and Intruder Alarm Maintenance in Devizes

Police.uk records for August 2025 to July 2026 inside the Devizes Town neighbourhood show about 145 shoplifting offences, 158 of criminal damage and arson, 29 burglaries and 19 vehicle crimes. The boundary was simplified for the query and police.uk anonymises locations, so the figures are approximate.

We maintain existing CCTV, intruder alarms and access control: camera views, recording, detector tests, batteries and door entry, for shops around the Market Place and units at Hopton.

Devizes conservation area and its listed buildings

HeritageCheck, using Historic England data, counts 295 listed buildings in the Devizes conservation area: six at Grade I, 40 at Grade II* and 249 at Grade II. The Grade I entries include Devizes Castle, Brownstone House, 17 Market Place and the churches of St John the Baptist and St Mary. The Grade II* entries include the Town Hall, the Market Cross and the Law Courts and County Police Office.

The Corn Exchange was listed at Grade II on 9 April 1954. Anything proposed for a listed facade should be agreed with Wiltshire Council first.

The Northgate brewery site and Caen Hill Locks

Wadworth's Northgate Brewery closed in 2023 and brewing moved to Folly Road on the north-eastern edge of the town. On 7 March 2025 Wiltshire Council's Eastern Area Planning Committee unanimously approved 102 homes, shops and open space on the old site, with the listed red-brick brewery building and its tower kept and new links to the canal.

The Kennet and Avon Canal climbs 237 feet through 29 locks at Caen Hill over two miles. The Canal & River Trust describes the flight as a scheduled ancient monument and maintains the locks.

The Devizes Area Neighbourhood Plan

In January 2026 Devizes Town Council described a joint neighbourhood plan with Bishops Cannings Parish Council and Rowde Parish Council. The plan runs to 2036, in line with the Wiltshire Local Plan Review, and a public event was announced for 24 January 2026 at the Corn Exchange.

Its stated priorities include employment and enterprise, town centre vitality and protecting local character. Rowde is one of the three parishes involved, which links the village with the town.

Devizes fire station and recent incidents

Devizes is an on-call station. The service lists 21 stations in the Wiltshire Council area, most of them on-call. In November 2024 a fire in a mid-terraced building on Northgate Street, which housed a takeaway, spread into the roof spaces of neighbouring properties. Adjacent buildings were evacuated, the street was closed between New Park Street and Market Place, and crews from nine stations attended.

Since 1 April 2024 the service has not attended automatic alarms at low-risk commercial premises on the signal alone. It still attends homes, other places where people sleep and identified higher-risk premises, and it responds when a 999 call reports a fire.

Frequently asked questions

Will crews come if the alarm sounds at our Hopton unit?

Not on the signal alone if the unit counts as a low-risk commercial premises, as the service's policy has stood since 1 April 2024. A 999 call reporting a fire brings crews. We service the system and log each activation.

We run an events venue over several floors in Devizes. What should the assessment cover?

Each floor and each layout in regular use: hall capacity, upper rooms, any basement bar, exits, lifts and alarm zoning. The Corn Exchange, for example, lists different capacities for banquets and for concerts.

Can you service alarms and fire doors in a listed Market Place building?

Yes. Servicing tests and maintains what is already there, so the building is left as it is. The Market Place has Grade II* and Grade I entries nearby, so speak to Wiltshire Council before anything new is fixed to a facade. We report faulty closers, detectors and seals for your decision.

We are converting an older commercial building in Devizes. Does the assessment need redoing?

Yes, because the uses, occupants and escape routes change. The former Northgate brewery, approved in March 2025 for homes and shops around the retained brewery building, is one local example. A fresh assessment should cover each use and name who manages the shared stairs, doors and alarm system.

Do you cover Rowde and Roundway as well as the town?

Yes. Rowde is about 1.7 miles north-west of the centre on the A342, and Roundway, a ward of Devizes parish since April 2017, is about 1.25 miles to the north-east. We attend from our Hayes head office.
