Fire Safety & Security Services in Golders Green

Fire risk assessments, fire alarm installation, fire doors and CCTV for shopkeepers, landlords, managing agents and community buildings across Golders Green, Temple Fortune and Hampstead Garden Suburb, in NW11.

NW11 has two Grade II listed shopping parades with flats above them, a station and bus interchange, and a garden suburb where the Hampstead Garden Suburb Trust and Barnet Council both control what is fixed to a building. Work here is shaped as much by consent as by technical design.

IDS Global has traded since 2011 from its head office at 27-37 Station Road, Hayes, and is a member of the IFSM and the FPA. Engineers reach NW11 from Hayes by the A40, the A406 North Circular and the A41 to Finchley Road.

Businesses and buildings in Golders Green

Barnet's 2011 appraisal of the Golders Green Town Centre Conservation Area, designated in March 1998, describes a centre made almost entirely of purpose-built parades with shops at street level and flats above. It records a District Town Centre, with Golders Green Road as primary retail frontage and Finchley Road as secondary, and national chains beside shops serving the Jewish and Japanese communities. Cheapside and The Promenade, built between 1909 and 1914, hold 78 retail units between them. Behind the parades, Golders Way and Accommodation Road carry small light industrial and business uses, and the railway arches off Finchley Road hold garage workshops.

The appraisal of Hampstead Garden Suburb counts about 5,000 properties, 30 per cent of them flats, with sheltered housing at The Orchard, a synagogue and Kerem School on Norrice Lea, and Henrietta Barnett School. Barnet's advertisement controls single out the shops at Market Place and Temple Fortune. In Golders Green itself the appraisal notes mainly small synagogues that re-use other buildings, such as 5 to 11 Broadwalk Lane.

Fire Risk Assessments in Golders Green

London Fire Brigade's Barnet page listed three enforcement notices in June 2026 for two blocks of purpose-built flats of four or more floors in Golders Green, on Woodlands and on Golders Green Road.

We assess the whole building: shop, rear store, common stair, flat entrance doors, alarm cover and emergency lighting, and converted synagogues and halls where people gather. The responsible person receives a ranked action list.

Fire Alarm Installation in Golders Green

The Brigade was called at 06:47 on 27 May 2026 to a fire on Golders Green Road that destroyed a ground floor shop, partly collapsed the storage area behind it and damaged part of the first and second floors. Fifteen engines and about 100 firefighters attended at its height, the flats above were evacuated and no injuries were reported.

For parades with flats above, we design BS 5839 detection that covers the shop, its rear store and the stair, with sounders residents can hear and a panel a shop manager can read.

Fire Door Installation in Golders Green

At 03:40 on 30 May 2026 a fire caused by unsafely discarded smoking materials damaged half of a flat on Brentmead Place. Seven people left before crews arrived, and firefighters used a short extension ladder to rescue three people and a cat from a flat roof.

In a block, the flat entrance door and stair door protect the way out. In the Suburb, the Trust asks owners to keep and upgrade original front doors, with replicas where that is impossible, so we inspect before recommending replacement and agree consents first.

CCTV Installation in Golders Green

Police.uk data for August 2025 to July 2026 shows about 227 shoplifting offences in the Childs Hill neighbourhood, against about 70 in Golders Green and 53 in Garden Suburb.

For shops we cover tills, stockrooms and rear service roads. For Suburb houses and flats, cameras are chosen small and sited on existing structures, because the Trust's guidance does not favour poles.

Hampstead Garden Suburb: the Trust and Barnet

Barnet designated the Suburb a conservation area in 1968, and its appraisal says it holds the borough's greatest concentration of listed buildings: two Grade I, 41 Grade II* and 740 Grade II. An Article 4 direction covers most of it and brings replacement external doors, windows and roofing under council control, alongside the Trust's Scheme of Management, in force since January 1974.

The Trust's design guidance says CCTV cameras, gates and changes to external doors may need consent from both Barnet and the Trust. It wants alarm boxes visible but not prominent, kept off decorative gables, and says driveway gates will in most cases not normally be acceptable. The crematorium and most of The Bishop's Avenue sit outside the Trust's control.

Listed parades, the Hippodrome and the crematorium

The 2011 appraisal counts seven listed buildings in the town centre conservation area, all Grade II, among them the Hippodrome on North End Road (built 1913), the war memorial and the two parades. Barnet says works affecting a listed building's special interest without consent are a criminal offence, and that it judges shutters and other shopfront security measures against its design guidance.

The Hippodrome housed the BBC Concert Orchestra until 2003. Golders Green Crematorium on Hoop Lane opened in 1902. The 12 acres of gardens are Grade I on the national register, the buildings Grade II or II*.

Recorded crime in the NW11 neighbourhoods

We counted police.uk street-level crimes inside each Metropolitan Police neighbourhood boundary for August 2025 to July 2026. Police.uk anonymises locations, so the figures are approximate. Childs Hill recorded about 2,166 crimes, including 227 shoplifting, 186 vehicle crimes and 117 burglaries. Golders Green recorded about 1,246, with 145 vehicle crimes, 82 burglaries and 70 shoplifting. Garden Suburb recorded about 1,030, with 237 vehicle crimes, 118 burglaries and 53 shoplifting.

Fire cover and alarm calls

The Brigade lists four stations in Barnet: Barnet, Finchley, Hendon and Mill Hill. Crews from Finchley, Willesden and West Hampstead were among those at the May 2026 shop fire, and Hendon and Mill Hill crews also attended Brentmead Place.

Between 7am and 8.30pm its alarm policy asks for a 999 call confirming a fire before crews attend most commercial premises. It names flats, schools, care homes, HMOs and Grade I, II and II* listed buildings as attended at any hour, and Cheapside, The Promenade and the Hippodrome are Grade II.

Frequently asked questions

Does a shared house in Golders Green need an HMO licence?

Barnet's mandatory scheme covers five or more unrelated occupants. Its additional scheme, running for five years from 27 October 2022, covers three or four sharing and certain converted blocks. Golders Green and Childs Hill were among ten wards named in a selective licensing consultation from 15 June to 15 September 2026, so check the outcome with Barnet. We can assess fire precautions before you apply.

Can I put a camera or alarm bell box on a house in Hampstead Garden Suburb?

Usually only with agreement from both the Trust and Barnet Council. The Trust's design guidance says cameras may be approved if small and discreet, fixed to existing structures rather than poles, and placed where no tree needs pruning. Alarm boxes should be visible but not prominent. We survey first and prepare a positions plan for your application.

Will the Brigade attend if our Golders Green Road shop alarm sounds at lunchtime?

Not on the alarm alone. Between 7am and 8.30pm the Brigade asks for a 999 call confirming a fire before attending most commercial premises, so name a person who checks the panel and makes that call. From 8.30pm to 7am every alarm is attended.

Can a shop on the listed parades fit security shutters or external cameras?

Only with care. Cheapside and The Promenade are Grade II listed, and Barnet's 2011 appraisal says it will act against unlawful shopfronts and judges security measures such as shutters against its design guidance. Works affecting a listed building without consent are a criminal offence. Speak to Barnet's planning team before anything is fixed.
