Fire Risk Assessments by IDS Global

Fire Safety & Security Services in Basildon

Fire risk assessments, fire alarm installation, CCTV and automatic gates for landlords, care providers, retailers and industrial occupiers across SS13 to SS16, including Laindon and Pitsea.

Basildon was designated a new town in January 1949 and its premises reflect that: post-war shopping precincts and tower blocks, leisure parks, and large industrial and engineering sites. We reach the town from Hayes via the M25 and the A127.

IDS Global has traded since 2011 from one office at 27-37 Station Road, Hayes, and is a member of the IFSM and the FPA.

Businesses and buildings in Basildon

Basildon was designated a new town on 4 January 1949 to take London overspill, and construction of its shopping precinct began in 1956. The 2021 census counted 115,955 people in the built-up area. Pitsea has its own town centre, opened in 1976 along Northlands Pavement with a Sainsbury's anchor store and the Pembroke House office block. Laindon, the western part of Basildon, grew around a railway station that opened in 1888.

Employment is spread across the town. Ford's Dunton Technical Centre in Dunton Wayletts, Laindon, covers 268 acres and opened in October 1967, with around 3,000 engineers working there. Basildon University Hospital opened in 1973, and Festival Leisure Park has 15 restaurants and a 16-screen cinema.

Fire Risk Assessments in Basildon

Basildon mixes post-war blocks, precinct shops, leisure units and newer developments, and each needs an assessment that reflects how it is used today. Brooke House, a 14-storey Grade II listed block from the early 1960s, shows how complex that can become.

We assess shared houses, care homes, shops and offices, and record compartmentation, fire doors, escape routes and alarm coverage in a prioritised action plan.

Fire Alarm Installation in Basildon

Essex County Fire and Rescue Service recorded 1,242 false alarms from commercial buildings in 2023, and names cooking fumes, dust, smoking or vaping and poor maintenance as common causes. Detector type and position matter most in kitchens and other rooms where these causes arise.

We design and install BS 5839 systems for care homes, leisure and retail units and industrial buildings, choosing detection for the room and setting up zoning so staff can locate a signal quickly.

CCTV Installation in Basildon

Police.uk figures for September 2025 to August 2026 show about 786 shoplifting offences inside the Essex Police Basildon neighbourhood boundary, against about 358 in Pitsea. Other offences are counted below.

We position cameras on entrances, tills, loading areas and car parks, with recording a manager can export for the police.

Gates & Automation by IDS Global

Automatic Gates in Basildon

A business park proposed in January 2025 on land off Burnt Mills Road, next to the A127, would provide about 72,000 square metres of logistics, warehouse and industrial space, including one unit over 500,000 square feet.

Sites of that kind need entrances that keep lorries moving and the yard secure out of hours. We fit sliding and swing gates with safety edges and access readers, linked to CCTV.

Basildon Local Plan and town centre regeneration

Basildon's last adopted local plan dates from 1998. On 21 July 2026 the housing minister issued the council with a Local Plan Intervention Direction, requiring a Regulation 19 consultation to start by 10 August 2026 and the plan to be submitted by 31 December 2026. Councillors later voted to explore a judicial review of the direction.

Regeneration of the town centre continues alongside. The Westgate masterplan covers 5.24 hectares on the western edge of the centre. The project the planning committee approved in November 2025 includes about 550 homes, a 95-bedroom hotel, 97 flats for older people with extra care needs and a new Aldi. In May 2026 the council leader said the regeneration would broadly carry on.

Brooke House and Basildon's listed buildings

Brooke House, a 14-storey block built between 1960 and 1962 and listed Grade II in 1998, is the best known. In January 2024 a local news report said Essex County Fire and Rescue Service had confirmed that remedial work to its staircase could not be done in stages, so the block had to be emptied, and the council cabinet considered a £16 million refurbishment. The councillor responsible said listed status made the work harder and costlier.

The borough has 29 listed buildings, including the Grade I Church of St Nicholas in Laindon, the Grade II* Church of Holy Cross and the Grade II Cromwell Manor at Pitsea Hall. Fixing alarms or cameras to listed fabric needs a careful survey first.

Basildon fire station and automatic alarm calls

Basildon fire station on Broadmayne, SS14, is a wholetime station, crewed around the clock. Its crews attended an industrial unit fire on Vange Park Road in April 2025, which spread to four lorries and ten skips, and a terraced row fire near Rookyards in June 2026, where an aerial ladder platform was used.

The service says it will not respond to fire calls from automatic alarms unless a 999 call confirms a fire or physical signs of one, or the building has an exemption. It groups premises in three levels of risk: full immediate mobilisation for high life risk, known higher risk or exempt premises, and lower risk buildings that face a call challenge. In 2023 it logged 2,574 incidents at commercial buildings, of which 1,242 were false alarms.

Recorded crime in the Basildon and Pitsea neighbourhoods

We counted police.uk street-level crimes inside the Essex Police Basildon and Pitsea neighbourhood boundaries for September 2025 to August 2026. Police.uk anonymises locations and we filtered points against the published boundaries, so figures are approximate.

The Basildon neighbourhood recorded about 9,610 crimes, including 786 shoplifting offences, 564 vehicle crimes, 272 burglaries and 107 robberies. Pitsea recorded about 5,020, including 358 shoplifting offences, 259 vehicle crimes, 146 burglaries and 58 robberies. Together that is roughly 1,140 shoplifting offences, 820 vehicle crimes and 420 burglaries.

Frequently asked questions

Does a shared house in Basildon need an HMO licence?

Mandatory licensing has applied since 1 October 2018 to properties occupied by five or more people from more than one household who share facilities such as a kitchen or bathroom. In September 2025 the council approved feasibility work on selective licensing and announced an HMO taskforce to follow up illegal HMOs. We can assess fire safety, alarms and doors before an inspection.

Will the fire service attend our alarm at a Basildon unit?

Essex County Fire and Rescue Service will not respond to an automatic alarm unless a 999 call confirms a fire or signs of one, or the building has been granted an exemption. Your staff therefore need a clear routine for checking a signal and calling 999.

What should a care home alarm in Laindon cater for?

The Care Quality Commission lists Woodbury Court on Tavistock Road, Laindon, as supporting people with dementia, physical disabilities and sensory impairments, and Acorn House on Somerset Road as supporting adults under 65 with learning disabilities. Residents in such homes may not respond to a sounder alone, so we plan zoning, visual signals and a clear evacuation routine around the people living there.

Can you secure a yard or industrial unit off the A127?

Yes. Basildon's industrial occupiers range from Ford's Dunton Technical Centre to the business park proposed off Burnt Mills Road in January 2025. For a unit with a yard we usually combine an automatic gate, cameras covering the entrance and loading area, and access control on the office door. A survey will decide the layout.

Is fire safety training available for Basildon staff?

Yes, through our fire safety training service. Essex County Fire and Rescue Service names cooking fumes, dust, smoking or vaping and poor maintenance as common causes of false alarms, so training for managers and fire wardens covers how to investigate and log a false alarm and when to call 999, alongside evacuation practice.
