The Great West Road was opened in 1925 to take traffic away from a congested High Street, and the stretch north of the town became known as the Golden Mile once factories moved in. Several of those buildings survive in new uses. The grade II listed Currys factory and head office of 1936 was restored by Foster & Partners and is now occupied by JCDecaux, and the 1932 Coty building is now the BMI Syon Clinic. At the western end, the 1936-37 Gillette factory closed to production in April 2006 and has been used for filming since The Vinyl Factory bought it in 2013. Hounslow's planning committee approved its expansion in March 2025, from about 63,000 sq ft of stages to around 150,000 sq ft. The council's canal appraisal also notes the aggregate works, waste transfer station and warehouses of Transport Avenue.

South of the Great West Road the stock is mostly residential and mixed use. Ballymore's Brentford Project covers 11.8 acres between the High Street and the river, with 876 homes planned, about 14,000 sq m of retail and 8,000 sq m of leisure and cultural space, and completion targeted for 2027. To the east, the 17,250-capacity Gtech Community Stadium opened in 2020 on a 7.6-acre site off Lionel Road, next to Kew Bridge station, with new housing built around it.

Hounslow Council publishes appraisals for three Brentford conservation areas: St Paul's Brentford, the Grand Union Canal and Boston Manor, and The Butts. St Paul's was designated on 28 February 1989 and extended on 17 May 2001. Its appraisal describes a late Victorian and Edwardian new town between the railway and the High Street, and lists the grade II former fire station of 1897, designed by Nowell Parr in red brick and terracotta, and the grade II* 60 High Street. The canal area, designated in July 2001, includes grade I Boston Manor House of 1623, the grade II Gallows Bridge of 1820, and the grade II Toll House of 1911 beside Brentford Lock, once a gauging lock for weighing cargo.

LFB alarm response and the Transport Avenue fire

London Fire Brigade does not send crews to automatic fire alarms from most workplaces between 7am and 8.30pm unless a fire is confirmed by a 999 call. The exemptions matter in Brentford: flats including high-rise blocks, HMOs, hotels, student accommodation and grade I, II* and II listed buildings still receive a daytime response.

On 30 May 2026, ten fire engines and around 70 firefighters, with crews from Heston, Chiswick and Southall, attended a fire involving about 60 tonnes of household waste at a facility on Transport Avenue. The cause was not known at the time of the Brigade's report.

Crime in Brentford East, Brentford West and Syon

We counted police.uk street-level crimes inside three Metropolitan Police neighbourhood boundaries for August 2025 to July 2026, so the totals are approximate. Syon and Brentford Lock recorded about 1,730 crimes, including around 157 vehicle crimes, 124 shoplifting offences and 73 burglaries. Brentford West recorded about 1,083, with roughly 92 vehicle crimes, 65 burglaries and 60 shoplifting offences. Brentford East recorded about 823, including 77 vehicle crimes and 47 burglaries, but only three shoplifting offences.

Vehicle crime and burglary appear in all three, so perimeter and car park coverage matters across the town.

Town centre regeneration between the High Street and the river

The council's Brentford Town Centre Masterplan was approved on 11 March 2024. Ballymore's scheme on the south side of the High Street delivered its first phase of 327 apartments by summer 2024, and adds a supermarket, an Everyman cinema and the grade II* St Lawrence's Church in new cultural and dining use.

Will the fire brigade attend an alarm at my Great West Road office during the day?

Not automatically. Under London Fire Brigade policy, crews do not attend automatic alarms from most commercial premises between 7am and 8.30pm unless someone calls 999 to confirm a fire. Listed buildings are exempt, which may cover a former Golden Mile factory. Your fire procedure should say who checks the alarm and calls.

Do I need permission to fit cameras on a building in the St Paul's conservation area?

It depends on the building. The St Paul's appraisal lists several grade II and grade II* buildings along the High Street, and works to a listed building can need consent. We survey first, propose discreet positions and cable routes, and suggest you confirm the position with Hounslow Council before any fixing.

Does a shared house in TW8 need an HMO licence?

Usually, if three or more people from two or more households live there. Hounslow's additional licensing scheme covers the whole borough, including Brentford, and runs from 11 December 2025 to 10 December 2030.
