Businesses and buildings in Notting Hill

Notting Hill has no official boundary, but it is most closely tied to the W11 postcode. The Ladbroke estate was built speculatively between the 1820s and the mid 1870s, with half or fully stuccoed terraces arranged around communal gardens. Its planners kept shops and pubs to the edges: Holland Park Avenue, Portobello Road, northern Ladbroke Grove and short stretches of Westbourne Grove and Clarendon Road. Further east, the council records rows of shops with living accommodation above along Notting Hill Gate, Pembridge Road, Westbourne Park Road and parts of Ledbury Road and Portobello Road, most of them in commercial use since they were built.

Retail is a mix of high-end shopping, restaurants, independent boutiques and antique dealers, with fashion and designer shops along Westbourne Grove and Ledbury Road. At the corner of Notting Hill Gate and Kensington Church Street, the Newcombe House scheme was recommended for approval by the council on 18 January 2024 and accepted by the Mayor's office on 29 April 2024. The developer describes around 170,000 sq ft of workspace across two new buildings, shops and cafes at street level, a small number of affordable homes and a new NHS medical centre, with completion planned for mid 2027.

CCTV Installation in Notting Hill

A shop on Portobello Road trades behind a line of market stalls on Fridays and Saturdays, which can block a camera's view of the door and the pavement. We plan camera positions around that layout, covering entrances, tills and stock rooms, with footage that can be exported for the police.

Where an antiques arcade or a restaurant has several entrances or a rear service yard, we add cameras there and set up remote viewing so owners can check the premises when the street is closed to traffic.

Intruder Alarms by IDS Global

Intruder Alarm Installation in Notting Hill

The council's Pembridge Conservation Area appraisal names burglar alarms, together with wires and lights, among the external attachments that create clutter when they are not sympathetically located. We survey the elevation first and agree bell box and cable positions that keep the front of a stuccoed shop or terrace as tidy as possible.

Systems can be graded to the stock and insurance requirements of a jeweller or antiques dealer, with monitoring and keyholder alerts.

Fire Risk Assessments by IDS Global

Fire Risk Assessments in Notting Hill

Where a shop or restaurant has flats above, as on parts of Notting Hill Gate, Pembridge Road and Ledbury Road, the assessment has to consider how a fire in the commercial unit could affect the escape route from the homes. We check separation between the uses, the protection of shared stairs, detection, emergency lighting and fire doors, and give you a prioritised action plan under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005.

Fire Alarm Installation in Notting Hill

We design and install BS 5839 fire alarm systems for restaurants, galleries, offices and mixed-use buildings. In a converted period building, the detector layout and cabling are planned to suit the existing fabric, and for new office floors, such as those planned at Notting Hill Gate, we can work with the fit-out contractor on detection, sounders and cause and effect.

Portobello Road Market

Portobello Road runs for about 1.72 km, roughly parallel with Ladbroke Grove, and its market passes beneath the A40 and railway bridges near the Westway. The street stalls and pitches on the road are regulated and operated by the Royal Borough, through a market office on Tavistock Road. According to the council, a smaller number of stalls trade from Monday to Thursday and the full market opens on Fridays and Saturdays. Saturday is the only day when all five sections open, including antiques, and antique sellers have been on the road since the late 1940s.

Notting Hill Carnival

Westminster City Council listed the 2026 Carnival dates as Sunday 30 and Monday 31 August. The organisers describe a footprint across W10 and W11, with the parade starting at 10.30am on both days. Selling alcohol during Carnival needs a premises licence or a Temporary Event Notice, and live or recorded music may need a licence. For shops and restaurants on or near the route, it is worth checking before the bank holiday that CCTV is recording, alarms are set and monitored, and keyholder details are up to date.

Ladbroke and Pembridge conservation areas

The Ladbroke Conservation Area was designated in 1969, one of the Royal Borough's earliest, and its appraisal was adopted in October 2015. The Pembridge appraisal, adopted in January 2017, covers the area between Westbourne Grove and Notting Hill Gate. It notes iron security bars fitted in many lower ground floor windows and says these can be intrusive if not designed sympathetically. The council uses its appraisals when determining planning applications, so external security equipment is best planned with the building's character in mind.

Recorded crime in W11 neighbourhoods

We counted police.uk street-level records for August 2025 to July 2026 inside four Metropolitan Police neighbourhood boundaries, so the figures are approximate. Colville recorded about 244 thefts from the person, 234 shoplifting offences, 110 vehicle crimes and 79 burglaries. Pembridge had around 125 shoplifting offences, 97 thefts from the person and 85 burglaries. Notting Dale logged about 96 vehicle crimes and 50 burglaries, and Norland recorded about 101 vehicle crimes and 56 burglaries.

Frequently asked questions

Can we fit an alarm bell box to a shop in the Pembridge Conservation Area?

The appraisal does not forbid alarms, but it lists burglar alarms and external wiring among alterations that have harmed the area when badly placed. The council uses its appraisals when assessing planning applications. We survey the frontage, propose a discreet bell box position and route cables internally where we can, so the installation sits comfortably on the building.

Which days is Portobello Market busiest for nearby shops?

The council says a smaller number of stalls trade from Monday to Thursday, with the entire market open on Fridays and Saturdays. Saturday is the only day all five sections open, including antiques. If your shop faces the market, we can position cameras so the door and till stay in view when stalls are set up outside.

What should a Notting Hill business check before Carnival weekend?

Carnival runs on the Sunday and Monday of the August bank holiday. Before the weekend, confirm that CCTV is recording and storing footage, intruder alarms are serviced and monitored, and keyholders are available. If you plan to sell alcohol, check your premises licence or apply for a Temporary Event Notice.

How much shoplifting is recorded around Portobello Road?

Our count of police.uk records for August 2025 to July 2026 shows about 234 shoplifting offences and 244 thefts from the person in the Colville neighbourhood, and around 125 shoplifting offences in Pembridge. These are approximate figures based on neighbourhood boundaries. Cameras covering entrances, tills and high-value displays give you evidence to support a report.

Is new office space coming to Notting Hill Gate?

Yes. The Newcombe House scheme at the corner of Kensington Church Street was accepted by the Mayor's office in April 2024, and the developer describes around 170,000 sq ft of workspace with completion planned for mid 2027. Incoming tenants will need fire alarms, access control and a fire risk assessment for their floors, which we can provide.
