Businesses and buildings in Heathrow

Planning documents call the Bath Road the "Hotel Strip". A 2012 Greater London Authority report places most hotels on its north side, mid and high end in the centre and budget at either end. Hillingdon's 2018 report for 276 Bath Road, Sipson, covers a 623-bed building shared by two hotel operators, plus a proposed 250-bed hotel and multi-storey car park on the same plot. The Flightpath car park opposite the airport holds circa 630 off-airport spaces, with a 2025 application to convert it to electric vehicle charging and parking.

Freight and distribution buildings sit alongside. Polar Park, about 300 metres from the airport boundary with access to the A4 and the Northern Perimeter Road, is marketed for time-critical logistics; its Unit 1 is about 122,400 sq ft with a 55 metre secure yard. Airport Gate Business Centre is a terrace of light industrial and storage units with service yards. Behind them lie Harmondsworth, home to the British Airways Waterside headquarters, and Longford, the westernmost settlement in Greater London.

A Bath Road hotel and a Polar Park warehouse sit a few hundred metres apart, yet the fire brigade treats their alarms differently. Hotels are guest accommodation, so crews still attend their automatic alarms at any hour, and every unwanted activation can mean an evacuated building full of guests. Shared buildings such as the two-operator hotel at 276 Bath Road also need clear cause and effect across both businesses.

We design and install BS 5839 systems for hotels, warehouses and multi-let units, choosing detectors for kitchens, loading bays and plant rooms so staff can locate and verify an alarm quickly.

Vehicle crime is the pattern that stands out once the airport is taken out of the figures. In our analysis of police.uk data for August 2025 to July 2026, around 305 vehicle crimes were recorded in the Heathrow Villages neighbourhood outside the airport, with clusters at parking areas, the Colnbrook By-pass, Bath Road and Sipson Road.

For hotel and off-airport car parks we position cameras to read number plates at barriers and cover the whole parking area, not just the entrance. For logistics yards we cover gatehouses, dock doors and trailer parking.

Access Control near Heathrow

Logistics buildings here have many entry points: Polar Park's Unit 1 has six dock doors, five level access doors and parking for 14 HGVs and 114 cars. Hotels have back of house space that guests should not reach.

We install card, fob and keypad access control that separates warehouse, office and loading areas, with audit trails showing who entered which zone and when.

Logistics space on this side of the airport is marketed on its secure yards, and the gate is the first line of that security. Hotel and off-airport car parks need barriers that let shuttle buses and booked customers in without leaving the site open.

We install sliding and swing gates and rising barriers for HGV yards and car parks, linked to access control, number plate cameras or intercom.

Fire response around the airport

Two fire services operate here. Heathrow's own Airport Fire Service handles the airfield and alarm activations in the terminals and airport buildings, running two stations placed to reach any point within the boundary in three minutes. The London Fire Brigade also runs Heathrow fire station at Building 450, Northern Perimeter Road, Longford, one of four LFB stations in Hillingdon alongside Hayes on Shepiston Lane, Hillingdon and Ruislip.

For hotels, warehouses and car parks on Bath Road and in the villages, the London Fire Brigade is the service to plan around.

Alarm calls from hotels and logistics sites

Under the LFB policy on automatic fire alarms, crews are not sent to most commercial alarm signals between 7am and 8.30pm unless someone calls 999 to confirm a fire. Hotels, motels, hostels and B&Bs are exempt, so a hotel on the Bath Road still gets an attendance day and night. Warehouses and freight units are not exempt. At a distribution shed near Polar Park, a daytime alarm relies on staff checking it and calling 999, so the fire risk assessment should say who does that on every shift.

The Brigade reports that AFAs made up 34% of its incidents in 2025, about 47,500 calls, and fewer than 1% of non-residential alarm calls were fires.

Harmondsworth, the Great Barn and the third runway

Harmondsworth Village was designated a conservation area in 1970, one of the first in Hillingdon, and Longford Village is also a conservation area. The council's 2007 appraisal lists 13 listed buildings in Harmondsworth, led by the Grade I Great Barn of 1426-7 and the Grade II* St Mary's Church. The barn is part of the National Heritage Collection, and English Heritage warned in 2016 that a third runway would cause irreparable harm to its setting.

Expansion remains live. Heathrow proposes a 3,500m north-west runway and remains at the pre-application stage of a Development Consent Order. The Government consulted on a draft Heathrow Expansion National Policy Statement until 1 September 2026 and targets a planning decision in 2029. The 2025 proposals involve demolishing Longford entirely, and the 2016 layout would have removed around half of Harmondsworth.

Crime data with the airport separated out

The Metropolitan Police Heathrow Villages neighbourhood includes the airport, which dominates its totals. Splitting street-level police.uk data for August 2025 to July 2026 by location, about 5,300 of roughly 8,100 crimes fell within the airport and about 2,850 in the villages and along Bath Road. Figures are approximate, as crime locations are anonymised.

Outside the airport, vehicle crime (around 305) far outnumbers burglary (around 78) and shoplifting (around 53), with criminal damage and arson at around 166. For hotels, car parks and yards, that makes camera coverage of parking and controlled vehicle entry the first priority.

Will the fire brigade attend an alarm at our Bath Road hotel during the day?

Yes. Hotels count as guest accommodation under the London Fire Brigade's automatic fire alarm policy, so they are exempt from the daytime non-attendance rule that applies to most workplaces. The flip side is that every false alarm brings crews and usually an evacuation. Careful detector choice in kitchens and bedrooms, regular maintenance and a clear staff procedure reduce the disruption.

Does the fire brigade respond to our warehouse near the airport?

Only if a fire is confirmed between 7am and 8.30pm. Warehouses and distribution units are not on the London Fire Brigade exemption list, so during those hours your staff must check the alarm and call 999 if there is a fire. Outside those hours the Brigade attends automatic alarms. Your fire risk assessment should name who investigates alarms on each shift, including nights and weekends.

Do you work airside or inside the terminals?

No. We work for businesses outside the airport boundary: hotels, car parks, logistics units, offices and properties in Harmondsworth, Sipson and Longford. The airport itself has its own Airport Fire Service. If your premises are on Bath Road or in the villages, we can survey and quote.
